The Watkins Company Heritage

One of the big reasons I was drawn to become involved with the Watkins Company was their long history of providing great products with integrity.

The company was founded way back in 1868 by JR Watkins.  Medical doctors were few and far between back then.  And there were a lot of "snake oil" salesman selling bogus fake remedies out there to unsuspecting pioneers who were just trying to get some relief from their ailments.  Those good folks would buy those "magic tonics" using their hard-earned money, only to find out that they didn't work and the "snake oil" salesman that had sold it to them had fled town to prey on some more victims down the road. 

But JR Watkins was different.  He started his business selling pain liniment out of his horse and buggy.  The difference was, his liniment worked!  (In fact, it worked so well, it is STILL a best-seller in the product line today!)  And Watkins offered a money back guarantee...that he honored.  He had such success that he expanded to offer several salves and lotions and, in the late 1800's started a factory to product them all.  He started the first recorded "network marketing" effort, recruiting others to sell his product door to door.  By the time of his death in 1911, he had 2500 people helping to sell his product!

In the early 1900's, Watkins started adding kitchen products to the line.  Soon, kitchens across the country counted on Watkins Vanilla, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, and other Watkins products to help put food on the table.  A visit from "The Watkins Man" was an eagerly anticipated event in many homes.  The products were winning awards internationally as well!

By 1940, over 200 products were being offered by the company, marketed by over 10,000 Associates.  In 1978, the company was purchased by the Irwin Jacobs family, who are still committed to offering great products with integrity.
